This week in the studio…

It’s hard to believe we’re nearing the end of February! We have been very busy in the studio making pottery for our upcoming 2014 season. Each week we work to make around 200 items hand thrown on the wheel and hand built from slabs. Once they’re dry we’ll fire the bisque kiln, pack the pots and store them until the end of March when we start to glaze and finish the pieces and start stocking the shop shelves for you all to see!

This week we are working on the “holy grail” of pottery – teapots! It’s all about timing when you’re making teapots. First you  throw the body, spout and lid on the wheel. They’ll dry overnight wrapped in plastic and the next day we trim each pieces and pull a handle.

Once each piece of the teapot is the perfect degree of dryness we’ll attach the spout and handle and let it slowly dry overnight again. The following day you can finally try the lid out and let them dry together. It’s quite the process but very rewarding to see the finished product!

Do you have a teapot from Village Pottery or would you like one? Leave a comment below and let us know! Here’s one of my favourites from the 2013 season – hoping to do another similar one for this year.
