Daphne Large, Potter

Daphne Large
founded Village Pottery in 1973
after graduating with a degree in Fine Arts & Art Education from
Nova Scotia College of Art & Design.
Returning to her native Prince Edward Island, she rented a vacant
general store in the north shore village of New London. Although
Charlottetown was her home, New London area had ancestral connections
on both sides of her family.
With the help
of friends and family, Daphne began the task of turning an 1855
building into a pottery studio and gallery. Daphne
established a winter studio in Charlottetown, where she met Ian Scott
an instructor in what became Holland
College School of Visual Arts. Ian joined her in the
business,
and in 1976 they were married. The have three grown children - Rob,
Andrew, and Suzanne.
In
1994 the Village Pottery building
was purchased by Daphne and Ian and moved to its present
site with an expanded studio and restoration of the shop and
gallery in the years
following. Daphne continues to operate a home studio in
Charlottetown, and a summer studio in New London.
Daphne has been active in
various arts organizations and
served as Chair of the PEI
Council of the Arts. In 2004 she received the Outstanding Retailer
award from the Atlantic Canada Crafts Awards
of Excellence.
